Nutrition for Dry Eyes by Michael Lange OD, CNS

Nutrition for dry eye is a subject I discuss with my patients on a daily basis.  I have a very large dry eye patient population and have learned what works and what does not work over the last 25 years.  I have used the traditional approach using a combination of heating and massaging the lid margins to open the meibomian glands, using a good artificial tear with hyaluronic acid like oasis tears plus or blink preservative free and  cleaning the lids with a good lid hygiene foam like ocusoft or cliradex.  So for dry eye 3 things are still crucial:  cleaning, heating and lubricating.  I have also used all the prescription medications available for dry eye over the past 25 years.  Since I have become more in tune with the natural approach to dry eyes I find I prescribe medication very rarely now.

New Non-denatured whey protein concentrate from grass fed Pasture raised New Zealand A2 cows.

Fortifeye Super Protein

Fortifeye Super Protein

Dr Michael Lange briefly describes all new Fortifeye Super Protein.

Fortifeye Super Protein is an all new Non Denatured whey protein concentrate from grass-fed New Zealand A2 cows.  These are cows that have never been genetically altered that feed year round on pesticide free grass pastures in New Zealand.  This protein is rBGH & rBST hormone free, antibiotic free,  non GMO, soy free, corn free, wheat free and  gluten-free.  A2  milk is produced from A2 cows which have the protein A2 beta casein which is differnt form the A!1 beta casein produced by A1 cows.  A2 beta casein is the original form of beta casein produced by cows 1000s of years ago.   A1 beta casein is believed to have occurred 1000s of years ago from  a series of genetic mutations.  A2  cows milk and beta casein is believed to be more nutritious than A1  and actually have some preventative aspects to the protein. This is a non denatured whey protein concentrate that means no excessive heat or acid has been used in the creation of this whey protein concentrate. Another name would be undenatured whey protein concentrate. Undenatured whey protein is the same thing as non denatured whey protein concentrate.  A whey protein concentrate is more natural and less processed than a whey protein isolate.  This protein has not been stripped of the immunoglobulins and healthy fats that are crucial for absorption of the protein and enhancing the immune system.  Fortifeye Super Protein contains the full range of immune building  and regenerative components like: CLA,  Lactoferrin, Immunoglobulins, peptides, growth factors and covalent bonded cysteine ( precursor of glutathione).  Fortifeye’s non denatured whey protein concentrate  has gone through the processes to preserve and maximize the biological activity and  bio availability of the whey protein.  This protein has two delicious creamy chocolate and vanilla flavors.  Only organic and natural flavorings have been used in this product.  Adding  a good non denatured or undenatured whey protein concentrate  from free range grass-fed A2 cows to your daily nutritional regiment is a step in the right direction of anti-aging.  Fortifeye Super Protein will be available mid to late November at and thru many anti aging physicians offices.

Is the blue light u are being exposed to daily from your computer, tablet, smart phone, television and indoor lighting harming you?

2 Aug

Dr Michael Lange of Lange Eye Care and Associates and Fortifeye Vitamin discusses the potential harm blue light is causing and how a lens called  Blue Light Defense may  be the answer.  Blue Light protection is a hot new topic!

Studies are now proving that a specific wave length of light in the blue-violet  spectrum is harmful to our eyes and possibly our entire body.  This blue-violet light that is being produced and emitted by smart phones, computers, tablets, over head indoor lighting and television to mention a few.  All of us on a daily basis are exposed to extreme levels of this potentially harmful blue light.  Blue light nearest the range of 400-420 nm seems to have the most destructive effects on the retina in the eye.   These blue light rays not only may cause early aging in the eye with cataract formation at a younger age  and earlier signs of macular degeneration but new studies also indicate these blue light frequencies of light may have some negative effects on our general health. New studies indicate this evening light exposure especially  blue light exposure may interfere with our sleep patterns.   To be able to filter these harmful blue light rays by wearing a pair of glasses that has a lens that absorbs the harmful blue light was only a dream a few years ago.   Blocking and filtering the harmful blue light ( Blue Light Defense)  is now a reality. Blue light protection  is a hot topic in all of the continuing education seminars for eye care providers.  Many companies now have lenses that claim to block and filter the blue light. One must be very careful when shopping for blue light protective lenses.  First and foremost find out how much of the blue light and at what frequency in nanometers is actually being blocked. Many companies are selling only coatings that will have a minimal filtering effect  on the blue light and may block only small percents of the harmful blue light. Also u must make sure the lenses are cosmetically appealing to you. Some of these new generation Blue blocking lenses are yellow, yellow-brown, orange ,red or purple and may be cosmetically unappealing to you and actually may decrease the transmission of light into the eye .  Blue Light Defense lenses are one of the most exciting break thrus in the optical industry!  This is a lens that is almost clear and blocks over 99% of the wave lengths of blue light from 400-420nm. Theses lenses also block a good portion of the blue light all the way to 450 nm.  These blue light absorbing properties are actually throughout the lens in the monomer not a coating.  This lens comes in trivex material, 1.60 and 1.67 high index.  Dr Michael Lange says this is a true anti aging lens, “to be able to offer a lens to our patients that filters some of the most damaging rays of light and is almost totally clear is absolutely amazing!”    Dr Lange has been using this lens with his patients since November 2014 and states that patients comment all the time on how happy they are that purchased this particular lens. Many patients will state that their eye strain has been reduced significantly while working on the computer and many also state they are sleeping better.  Dr Lange was the first to use this new lens in the country but states many eye Doctors will be offering Blue Light Defense to their patients in the end of 2015.   Dr Lange recommends parents  purchase these lenses in no prescription for their children that don’t need a prescription that are on a digital app like smart phone or tablet throughout the day. He also says it is a no brainer to use this material  in all prescription eye wear. Why wouldnt u??  Here is a link  to purchase  non prescription Blue Light Defense  lenses and frame combo.  This price is only a short term  introductory price since the frame alone sells for this price and the lenses are basically free.  The internet is selling many  blue filtering lenses for a very discounted price however remember “you get what you pay for”.  Most of the blue filtering lenses are filtering a very small amount and virtually useless. Make sure you look for Blue Light Defense.

Dr Michael Lange says improve digestion and u will improve ocular health as well as overall health.

Dr. Michael Lange Optometrist and talk show host

Proper digestion is crucial for good ocular health as well as overall health discussed by Dr Michael Lange

When the food you consume on a daily basis is not digested well then the absorption of the nutrients is limited.  As we age our digestion can stop working at its peak level and then our overall health can suffer.  Many things can interfere with the natural digestive enzymes and natural bacteria in our digestive system and this can result in all sorts of conditions. Diet is often times the culprit for digestive issues. Todays diets are caloric dense and nutrient deficient. These foods are overly  processed, genetically modified , filled with pesticide, antibiotics, hormones, nitrites , nitrates, sugar, dyes, artificial sweeteners and preservatives. All of this can cause enormous stress on the digestive system.  Millions of people are plagued daily with food allergies, constipation, diarrhea, gas, acid reflux, heart burn, bloating, cramping…
